Flowmap: free software for accessibilty analysis

Flowmap Educational Edition

Flowmap comes in two editions: the Educational edition and the Professional edition. The Professional edition has more features, however, the Eductional edition is totally for free. If you're also interested in the extra features, visit the section on the Professional Edition.

If you want to get started rightaway, and still have access to many of Flowmap's essential features in the Educational edition, this is how to do it:

Download the necessary files

What you need is the Program file, the Manual, and the Datafiles. You can find the download links on the Flowmap Homepage

Install the Program

  • Copy the program file to a temporary directory:
    fm630016.exe for Windows 3.11 or fm630032.exe for Windows 95/98/NT/2000
  • Double-click the program file; it will extract a number of files in the temporary directory
  • Double-click the file setup.exe in the temporary directory and follow the instructions it gives for the installation of Flowmap. It's recommended that you install the program in the Program Files folder.
  • Delete the temporary directory
(By the way: it's also not difficult to uninstall Flowmap)

Extract the Data files

Preferably extract the data files in a separate subdirectory. Your directory tree could look something like this:
                       C:
                       |
               +-------+--------+
               | |
          Program Files Data Files
               | |
            FM63Wn32 Flowmap
                                |
                      +---------+---------+
                      | | |
                   Project1 Project2 Project3

Print the Manual

The manual is an English language, illustrated manual in MS-Word 6 (=7) format, contains about 130 pages, and includes an index. A Dutch language manual is also available.

Follow the Instructions in the Manual

The manual directs you through opening maps and data files, displaying them, selecting geographic features, changing settings, performing analyses, displaying the results, and importing and exporting files. If questions arise, please check the FAQ.

From there...

You're free to use Flowmap in combination with your own data in your company or non-profit organization.
